Hotel Certosa Featured
Hotel La Certosa is an ideal location for a holiday if you are in search of sea, culture and nature excursions and good food. The hotel is in fact situated on the beach in Marina del Cantone, one of the most beautiful bays in the Sorrento peninsula, behind Punta Campanella, in the heart of the natural marine reserve of the same name. With uncontaminated beauty, the reserve offers lots of land and sea routes to allow you to discover various sites full of history, legends and culture. Many paths cross the most evocative areas of the reserve and arrive to the crystal clear bays and near extremely interesting archeological sites containing the remains of villas that once belonged to Roman nobles, since many Romans chose the beautiful scenery around Punta Campenella as their summer residence. Such as Villa Pollio, on the Sorrento slope of the Punta, the so-called Regina Giovanna Baths, which is full of natural swimming pools: the remains are of rare magnificence and the view of the Gulf of Sorrento is extraordinary. In the most panoramic area of the peninsula on Punta della Campanella (reachable on foot by crossing the Reserve paths) you will find a villa/military garrison built to preside over the stretch of sea between the Punta and Capri during a period in which Emperor Tiber's Roman courts were transferred to the island (from 27 to 37 A.D.). Here, the magnificent view stretches between the two slopes of the peninsula: from the islands of Li Galli to Capri with the rocky Faraglioni cliffs, right up to the Gulf of Sorrento. The most beautiful walk of all brings you from Nerano, the area behind Marina del Cantone, to Leranto Bay, a gem set in the final piece of the Amalfi coast and also another protected area. The path goes beyond the Mediterranean maquis and near the bay is very panoramic with amazing views from Punta Penna to Punta Campenella, with Capri and the Faraglioni in the background. The landscape is enriched by watchtowers from the Bourbon era, erected following the terrible invasion of the Turks in 1588. The pleasantness of these areas charmed many ancient races who believed the area was inhabited by mermaids: we are in fact where Ulysses heard the enchanting song, while crossing the sound between Punta Campanella and Capri, near the islands of Li Galli. Many others, on the contrary to Ulysses, were shipwrecked here. The sea bed of the Reserve in an archeological treasure full of amphorae, furnishings and wrecks from the Greek and Roman era and form an extraordinary underwater landscape alongside the colorful sea fans, red and yellow sponges, stone bass and schools of tuna and urchins.
